Guided tour at the most beautiful museum in the world recently re-opened with all its splendour. Originally, it was built as the urban residence of the Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1579-1633) (nephew of Pope Paul V). He was extremely fond of all kind of artistic expression: ancient, renaissance and contemporary evocating the new gold age. Not particularly interested in middle age arte, he passionately looked for ancient sculptures. But the cardinal’s ambition favoured the creations of new sculptures and marmoreal groups to be compared with the ancient works: The Paolina Bonaparte Borghese portrait by Canova, The Ratto of Proserpina, The Group Apollo and Daphne by Bernini. During the years the collections has grown richer with new materials coming from recent archeological excavations and works recovered from cellars and bourgeois houses. At the upper floor the rich art- gallery with, among the others The Deposizione of Raffaello.
